Perhaps you want characters that actually reflect the audio you put on them. Or, perhaps you want to convert your own toys without taking out a second mortgage. Maybe you want Grandma's face to match her audio. Whatever your goal, you can accomplish it here. Welcome to Woodiebox!
Woodies and their chips work with one of your kids' favorite audio players, but they require invasive setup and a Windows computer. Please read through these instructions carefully to determine if Woodies are right for you!
You will need:
- 💻 Windows computer
- 💪 Phillips screw driver
- 🗂️ Micro SD card reader
- 🗳️ Your compatible music box (the Tonie variety only)
- 🌱 Woodie Chips or Woodies
- 🐻 TeddyBench software (free) installed on your Windows computer
- 🎵 Audio files
In following these instructions, you accept all liability for any damage done to your music box. WoodieBox and its affiliates are not responsible for any damage you do to your equipment in an attempt to follow these instructions. Attempt at your own risk.
Step 1:
Thank Team RevvoX, Gambrius, and everyone else over at gt-blog.de for making all of this possible.
Step 2:
There is nothing like the euphoria of successfully following these steps and hearing your audio play for the first time. Is taking apart your music box a little scary the first time? Yes! But it's totally, totally worth it. I'm right beside you and so are so many others. Be gentle, be patient, and know you can do it.
Decide you are okay with 1) disassembling your music box 2) having it semi-permenantly disconnected from the internet. You will have to re-upload all your DIY Woodie's audio files every time you reconnect to the internet. If your battery dies, it may reconnect and wipe audio. Worth it? I think so, but that is a decision only you can make. Keep files organized on your computer in case there are mishaps.
Step 2:
Order compatible chips or Woodies. Compatible, unlocked chips with corresponding IDs are available for sale in our store. The music box is very particular and 99% of chips will not function, therefore you can't just buy them off Amazon (believe me, I tried, lol!).
Step 3:
Receive compatible chips or Woodies and assemble desired toy.
Step 4:
Disconnect your compatible music box from the internet. This took me a bit of finagling about and quite a bit of doubt, but I did eventually succeed by following the instructions below. You can, too!
If your box's battery dies, your music box may reconnect automatically to the internet upon rebooting. Make sure you have your audio files saved on your computer. You may also choose to purchase a second music box and never connect it to the internet to avoid this. Or, just keep your charger handy!
To disconnect:
- Remove all characters from your box
- Pinch both buttons for 5-6 seconds until you hear a sound and the light begins to blink blue
- Pinch one button for 3 seconds and listen for an audio message declaring you are now disconnected from the internet
- Your light will now be blue instead of green.
Step 5:
Install TeddyBench on your Windows computer (free). This is available to download from GitHub. Again, thank you to Team RevvoX.
Step 6:
Watch this instructional video and reference steps below to open your music box and extract your micro SD card. BE GENTLE.
- Place box on floor in area with good traction
- Press all your weight into it, and turn it until it pops open - the first time is very hard
- Pull out base and remove screw
- Remove cover
- Unscrew two screws at top
- Slide black section holding batteries towards you - observe the pin at the bottom sliding out
- Gently grasp the green board and pull straight upward - observe the delicate, small pins on the bottom, and do not damage them!
- Your SD card holder is visible. Gently peel up the white residue as needed to press the SD card holder toward you
- The SD card holder slides down, then lifts easily up
- Lift it up and remove the SD card
Step 7:
Insert your micro SD card into your computer and open TeddyBench. Watch instructional video, and see instructions below.
- Your SD card and all current content will appear within the window
- Click "Add" on the top right of your screen
- Click "no" on the pop-up window
- Complete the number in the red box with the ID number provided with your Woodie chip
- Attend to any pop up windows, then watch your upload's progress
- Once the upload is finished, you may remove your SD card
Step 8:
To place your SD card back into your music box and reassemble it:
- Slide your SD card back into its slot face down with the gold visible at the bottom
- Flip the SD card holder back down, and gently press it up to lock in place
- Gently position the green panel so the pins on the right side line up with their slots
- Press it gently and firmly down and check that all the pins have aligned correctly and it is seated properly
- If anything has come unplugged from the board during this process, plug it back in
- Slide the black piece with the batteries back into place, watching the bottom slot, and line up the screw holes
- Screw in the two screws
- Put on the cover
- Screw in the screw
- Put the base back in and twist to secure
Step 9:
Turn on your music box and do a happy dance!
